Maolsuthian Ua Cearbhaill (O’Carroll) died AD 1031 was a political and academic figure in medieval Ireland during the eleventh century and the principle confessor to the High King of Ireland Brian Boru. Maolsuthian Ua Cearbhaill earned the accolade ” Chief doctor of the Western World in his time as the sage of Ireland”.

The Battle of Clontarf took place on the shore of the river liffey Dublin Ireland on April 23rd 1014 between the High King of Ireland Brian Boru with forces commanded by the Cearbhaill King of Elie (O’Carroll of Ely) against the combined Viking forces lead by Sigtrygg Sigurd and Brodir. The Battle of Clontarf was essentially a bloodbath with King Brian Boru killed along with the Viking commanding warlords in what is historically regarded as the most famous battle in Irish history.

Lord Teige O’Carroll of Ely after attending the Court of King Richard II of England at Westminster Hall in 1391 then attended the Papal Court in 1392 following a return from Avignon France in 1377. In 1395 and in the spring of 1399 Lord O’Carroll defeated the forces of King Richard II which had invaded the Kingdom of Ely under the command of the King’s cousin Roger Mortimer Earl of March. Following King Richard II return from Ireland he was deposed on September 30 1399.
